Decking in Cheshire, built properly
Specialist decking installers in Cheshire, from survey to final sweep
Decking Cheshire is an independent team of deck builders working across every part of the county. We design, engineer and install garden decking for homeowners in Chester, Warrington, Crewe, Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Northwich, Nantwich and all the towns and villages between them. Whether you want a low, level platform outside a set of bi-folds or a multi-level structure carved into a hillside garden, the process is the same: we survey the site properly, we design around what the ground is actually doing, and we build to a specification that will still be sound in fifteen years.
Most people searching for decking in Cheshire have had the same frustrating experience. Quotes arrive by text with a single per-metre figure and no mention of levels, drainage, joist centres or foundations — the four things that determine whether a deck lasts. We work the other way round. Our quotations set out the substructure specification in writing, itemise groundworks and waste removal, and confirm the exact board range, colour and fixing system you are paying for. If two decking firms in Cheshire quote wildly different prices, the difference is almost always hidden below the boards.
What makes a Cheshire deck last
Cheshire's ground is unusually varied for a single county. Heavy boulder clay dominates the south around Crewe and Nantwich; sandstone rises through Frodsham, Helsby and parts of Chester; the salt towns of Northwich and Winsford carry a history of ground movement; and the eastern hills at Macclesfield and Congleton bring shallow rock, steep gradients and real rainfall. A decking company that builds the same frame in all of those places is going to be wrong in most of them. Our decking fitters adjust foundation depth, pad size, post spacing and drainage strategy site by site.
Above ground, the fundamentals never change: a pressure-treated frame at 400mm joist centres, reduced to 300mm under heavy loads such as hot tubs; joist tape along every top edge so water cannot sit on the bearing surface; a fully ventilated void so the structure dries between downpours; stainless or high-grade coated fixings so nothing stains or corrodes; and consistent, deliberate board gapping for drainage and thermal movement. It is not glamorous work, but it is the difference between a deck you enjoy and a deck you replace.
Our decking services
Everything a Cheshire decking company should offer
We handle the whole project in house — design, groundworks, structure, boards, balustrade, steps, lighting and clean-up — so there is one team accountable for the finished result.
Composite decking
Capped composite boards in stone greys, warm oaks and charcoal. No annual oiling, no splinters, excellent grip when wet, and typically a 20–25 year manufacturer warranty. Composite decking in Cheshire.
Hardwood & softwood decking
Natural timber decks in pressure-treated redwood, dense hardwood or thermally modified boards, built with sealed cut ends and a ventilated substructure. Timber decking.
Raised & multi-level decking
Level access from your back door on a sloping plot, with engineered posts, compliant balustrade, wide step runs and usable storage below. Raised decking.
Hot tub decking
Reinforced bays on independent foundations, sized to your tub's filled weight, with removable service panels so the pump stays accessible for years.
Steps, balustrade & screens
Consistent riser heights, generous goings, guarding to regulations, and slatted screens that add privacy without turning a garden into a corridor.
Repairs, restoration & replacement
Re-boarding sound frames, replacing failed substructures, sanding and re-treating hardwood, and rescuing decks built at 600mm joist centres by someone else.
Why choose us
What you get from Cheshire decking installers who specialise
Decking is not a sideline for us. We do not fit kitchens in winter and decks in summer; we build decks, all year, across Cheshire. That focus shows up in small things — the way a fascia line runs true across an entire elevation, the way every cut end is sealed before it goes down, the way step risers are identical to the millimetre so nobody stumbles in the dark. It also shows up in the big things, like knowing when a garden needs a land drain before a single joist is cut.
We quote fixed prices. If we find something genuinely unforeseeable underground — an old brick footing, a redundant soakaway, a service run nobody knew about — we stop, show you, and agree the way forward before continuing. What we do not do is start low and add extras. It is the most common complaint we hear about other decking companies in Cheshire and it is entirely avoidable with a proper survey.
Every project ends the same way: the site is cleared, waste removed under licence, boards washed down, and a short handover covering care, warranty documentation and what to expect from the material over the first year. Then we leave you to enjoy it.

Client feedback
What Cheshire homeowners say
“Our garden fell nearly a metre from the back door and we had written it off. The raised deck they built has completely changed how we use the house in summer.”
“Three companies quoted. Only this one measured levels and talked about drainage. Two winters on, the deck is as solid and level as the day it was finished.”
“A small city courtyard turned into the nicest room in the house. Immaculate work, tidy every evening, and the price never moved from the quote.”
Decking FAQs
Common questions about decking in Cheshire
Still unsure about materials, costs or timescales? Our full FAQ page goes further, and our decking prices guide breaks down real project costs.
How much does decking cost in Cheshire?
Installed softwood decking generally starts around £110–£140 per m², while capped composite decking usually runs £180–£260 per m² depending on the board range, groundworks, steps and balustrade. Raised decks cost more than ground-level decks because of the additional substructure, guarding and steps. Every Decking Cheshire quotation is a fixed written price produced after a site visit, itemised so you can see exactly what the frame, boards, groundworks and extras contribute.
Do I need planning permission for decking in Cheshire?
In most cases no. Decking is usually permitted development when the finished surface is no more than 300mm above ground level and, together with other garden structures, covers no more than half the garden. Raised decks, decks in conservation areas and decks attached to listed buildings are the common exceptions, and those are frequent in Chester, Knutsford and Nantwich. We assess this at survey and tell you clearly whether an application is likely to be needed.
Composite or timber — which decking is better?
Composite is the lower-maintenance option: no annual sanding or oiling, no splinters, stable colour and typically a 20–25 year surface warranty. Timber costs less up front, feels warmer underfoot and can be re-finished, but it needs cleaning and treating each year. For shaded, damp Cheshire gardens we lean towards composite; for sheltered gardens where natural material matters to the design, hardwood is superb.
How long does a decking installation take?
A straightforward ground-level deck of 20–30m² takes three to four working days. Raised decks with steps, balustrade, lighting or a hot tub bay usually take five to eight days. Restricted access, such as a city-centre terrace with no side gate, can add a day for hand-carrying materials.
Which parts of Cheshire do you cover?
The whole county. Our decking installers work daily in Chester, Warrington, Crewe, Macclesfield, Northwich, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Nantwich, Congleton, Sandbach, Winsford, Ellesmere Port, Runcorn, Widnes and Frodsham, plus every village in between — from Malpas and Tattenhall in the south west to Poynton and Disley on the eastern edge.
Do you guarantee your decking?
Yes. Our workmanship carries a ten-year guarantee covering the substructure and installation, and composite boards carry the manufacturer's warranty, which is normally 20 to 25 years against fade, stain and structural defect. We provide all documentation at handover along with a simple care sheet.
